When it comes to crafting a delicious and refreshing cocktail, sometimes the best recipe is just a classic drink made with a world-class liquor.
That’s what Morgan Hurley, beverage director at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina, was thinking when he created the El Jefe Margarita. He turned to classic margarita ingredients – tequila, citrus and triple sec – for a refreshing addition to the Mex 1 cocktail menu. This margarita features Herradura Reposado tequila, lime juice, Cointreau triple sec and a dash of agave nectar.
“This style cocktail doesn’t usually call for agave, but I liked the depth and the touch of sweetness it provides,” Hurley explains.
Hurley and representatives from Bottles Beverage Superstore in Mount Pleasant visited the Herradura Reposado facility in Mexico. They tasted three different variations of the tequila and selected the one that best fit their beverage needs, Hurley explains.
“We designed this cocktail specifically for that Herradura double-barrel Reposado,” he notes.
And this hand-picked tequila also was the inspiration for the cocktail’s name: El Jefe (The Boss).
“El Jefe just rolls off the tongue,” Hurley says. “And that double-barrel Reposado is so good, it’s one of our favorite tequilas. We wanted a cocktail and a name that represents that – this tequila is the ‘el jefe’ in Charleston.”

El Jefe

2 parts Herradura Reposado tequila
1 part Cointreau triple sec
Half-part lime juice
Dash of agave nectar to taste

El Jefe Margarita is on the menu at Mex 1 in West Ashley and on Sullivan’s Island, so customers can try it out and then easily replicate the cocktail at home. This is also the featured cocktail at Bottles for the month of August.
"When it's this hot out, you just want a simple, easy-to-make drink that's satisfying and refreshing," says Travis Hartong, spirits consultant at Bottles. "When our friend Morgan over at Mex 1 suggested 'El Jefe' for the Bottles cocktail of the month in August, we knew it was the perfect drink for all of these 90-degree afternoons. And it uses a few of our favorite spirits here at Bottles.”
This margarita is easy to mix up at home and create a larger batch for your own Taco Tuesday party, Hurley says. It’s simply two parts tequila, one part triple sec, half-part lime juice and agave nectar to taste.

Hurley’s best tip for a DIY El Jefe is to use good, 100 percent agave Reposado. “It doesn’t have to be high-end, it just has to be a good one,” he says.
