Our Golden Angel Program Helps Seniors in Need

The onset of cold weather and the holiday season remind us that it is especially important to take care of our most vulnerable neighbors. Among those who need the most attention this time of year are our seniors. Many Lowcountry seniors live on fixed incomes that don’t always cover the basics and are isolated from family and friends.

For the past 12 years, Palmetto Goodwill has offered us all an outlet for our concern for the elderly of our community. Through the generous tax-deductible donations of people like you, the Golden Angel Program provides seniors with food, warm clothing and other necessities this holiday season.

Do memories of your parents or grandparents flood your heart during the holidays? Channel those feelings into a contribution to the Golden Angel Program. Here is everything you need to know about it.

1. Every Penny Goes to Seniors in Need

Palmetto Goodwill partners with the Department of Social Services and local agencies to identify disadvantaged seniors in our community. Thousands of seniors, often on fixed incomes, lack the resources to cover even the barest necessities. In addition, many seniors are homebound or have outlived their family and friends. A visit from a Golden Angel provides badly needed socialization as well as help with the basics.

2. Gifts of Things They Really Need

The Golden Angel Program brings seniors essentials like non-perishable food and vouchers for holiday treats at Publix. Gifts also include toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo, books and puzzles, and warm clothing like socks, hats and blankets.

3. A Party Along with a Gift

What’s better than an unexpected gift for the holidays? How about a party along with it? Palmetto Goodwill staff join parties hosted by area senior centers to serve meals, sing carols and surprise residents and day visitors with gifts. This combines your donation with a day of bonhomie for seniors who might not receive a visit the rest of the year.

4. Donate While You Shop

Palmetto Goodwill makes it easy for Goodwill shoppers to join in by purchasing $1 Golden Angels in the stores. Add a couple or 10 to your shopping cart and the cashier will ring it up while you make your other purchases. Think of all the good you are doing while saving money for yourself!

5. Donate Online or By Check

Donate here any amount you like, or send a check to Palmetto Goodwill;

Generous contributions in the first 12 years of the Golden Angel Program have allowed Palmetto Goodwill to serve 9,000 local seniors in need. That should make all of us feel warmer.
