South Bay: Where Luxury Resort Living Comes Home

The difference is evident from the moment you drive through the main entryway, flanked by handsome stone pillars and gas lanterns. Beyond that sits a landscaped front lawn adorned by a fountain of cast iron water birds, and benches that wouldn’t look out of place at White Point Garden. Overlooking it all are three rows of balconies, from which residents can take in the view or gaze at geese swimming in the pond just beyond.

And that’s just outside. The elegance truly hits home when you enter the lobby, brightened by rows of transom windows and three dazzling pendant chandeliers. From the parquet floor to the coffered ceiling, it quickly becomes clear that South Bay at Mount Pleasant isn’t just a senior living community — it’s a resort-quality experience that feels like home.

When you first step into the lobby, you know you’re in for a beautiful experience,” says Angie Basha, one of South Bay’s first residents. “Every area is light and spacious. But what I like most is the personal touch each member of the staff gives you. The South Bay staff and the other residents have become more than friends — they’ve become family.”

When its independent living area opened Oct. 1, South Bay raised the bar for senior living in the Charleston area. Opulent touches are everywhere, from the dramatic exposed wood truss overhanging the indoor saltwater pool, to the smooth black felt on the billiards table, to the brushed nickel finishes in the individual apartments, to the telescope in the library trained on a nearby eagle’s nest.

We want the residents to feel like they’re in a luxury resort but also home,” says South Bay marketing associate Denise Devanney. “Having those upscale amenities and services really fits in Charleston as well.”

Managed by Liberty Senior Living, South Bay is a full continuum-of-care community popularizing a 13-month rental option that provides seniors a degree of flexibility that other retirement communities can’t match. The facility’s health center, which will feature levels of care including skilled nursing, short-term rehab, memory support and assisted living, opens in the spring.

It will become the newest part of a sumptuous community tucked away behind the trees of Mount Pleasant’s Midtown area. Off the main lobby, the bright, high-ceilinged Moultrie Room features a baby grand piano and a spacious area for community activities like movies and musical performances. Outside is a courtyard with two gas fireplaces, a putting green, sofas and umbrella-covered tables where residents can wind down the day.

South Bay’s wellness area is comprised of its 45-foot-long pool, fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, group exercise room, and salon where residents can enjoy hair styling, massages, facials and more. The details crafted by architect LS3P — whether it’s the tall windows brightening the pool area, the ballet barre in the exercise room, or the pebbled accent wall in the salon — combine the property’s resort-like feel with its core focus on wellness.

Dining options abound. The pub, with its dark wood floor and ceiling and full liquor license, offers lighter fare. At fine-dining Sullivan’s Grill, food is made to order by executive chefs, and meat and seafood are locally sourced. The more casual Sweetgrass Market provides lunch options such as made-to-order salads and sandwiches, and pizza and soups crafted daily.

Apartments feature granite countertops, hardwood floors, zero-threshold showers, washers and dryers, and balconies with views of ponds or woods. Ground-floor units are available for pet owners who prefer easy access to outside. South Bay also provides a 24-hour concierge, weekly housekeeping, and valet service, bringing more of those resort-style amenities home.

South Bay community living is really something special,” Basha says. “When you first step through the front doors, you know you’re in a special place. Walking through the halls, you definitely feel the friendly and caring attitude of the staff and other residents. I love my new family.”
