For more than a decade, Donna suffered from bipolar disorder, depression and agoraphobia. One day, she even reached the point where she wanted to end her life. Instead, she called Trident United Way’s SC 2-1-1 helpline, and it both saved and changed her life.
“The first time I called 2-1-1, I literally had the pills in my hand to kill myself,” Donna recalls. She learned how to not only cope but also how to thrive, eventually becoming a mental health counselor.

That’s the power of 2-1-1, an easy-to-remember lifeline connecting people with critical resources and crisis intervention. Callers can reach out to 2-1-1 for assistance finding quality child care, counseling and support groups, job training, substance abuse, health services, food, clothing, housing and resources for seniors and those with disabilities. Available across South Carolina, 2-1-1 also hosts a crisis and suicide prevention line in addition to providing special supports for returning veterans.

During South Carolina’s October 2015 flood event, and more recently during Hurricane Matthew, 2-1-1 was a vital link for thousands of people. During the 1,000-year flood, it served as a referral hub for Tri-County residents fielding more than 4,155 disaster preparedness and relief calls from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties alone.

By late 2016, the 2-1-1 call center received more than 20,000 calls from Tri-County callers – many of which needed multiple resources – and had made more than 34,000 referrals to local services and programs. Callers most frequently sought help with rent and utility bills as well as food.

Services through 2-1-1 are accessible in a variety of ways, and Trident United Way maintains an up-to-date database of Tri-County area service providers, including support groups, community clinics, counselors, shelters, food pantries and programs for seniors.
